The Zones of regulation is the most awaited addition to our book collection. The zones of regulation is a curriculum designed to foster self-regulation and emotional control. This wonderful program is created by Leah Kuypers, an Occupational therapist and an Autism expert. No matter where your child/student falls on the Autism spectrum, problems with self-regulation is the most commonly encountered one. Successfully integrating sensory processing, executive functioning and emotional regulation, the Zones of regulation curriculum aims to teach our children self-regulation.
The Zones of regulation curriculum helps children identify the zone they are in and provides tools to help them move between zones:
Blue Zone – low state of alertness like sad, tired, sick, bored, etc.
Green Zone – regulated state of alertness described calm, happy, focused, etc.
Yellow Zone – heightened state of alertness like stress, frustration, anxiety, silliness, etc.
Red Zone – extremely heightened state of alertness or very intense feelings like anger, explosive behaviour, panic, etc.
The first two chapters of the book describe the curriculum in details and how to use it. In the third chapter, the topics covered include introducing students to the Zones curriculum – emotions, the zones in me, understanding different perspectives, my zones across the day and many more. Very informative and provides multiple ways to help children understand the curriculum in a personal context.
In the fourth chapter, we learn about exploring tools for calming and staying alert. The next chapter delves in depth in to learning when to use and apply tools. The tools are a combination of sensory supports, calming breathing techniques like lazy 8 breathing and thinking strategies like big vs little problem and many more.
The curriculum and the tools are inspired by the author’s many years of experience as an occupational therapist, Social thinking curriculum by Michelle Garcia Winner, Incredible 5 point scale by Kari Dunn Buron and the Alert program by Mary Sue Williams and Sherry Shellenberger and principles of cognitive behaviour therapy. As you can see, it is inspired by the best of the best and that’s why this curriculum is immensely popular and used by many schools and therapists.
