An Early Start For Your Child With Autism Book Review

An Early Start for your Child with Autism is a compilation of the the successful methods of the Early Start Denver Model that has helped many  children with Autism. Written by Drs. Sally Rogers, Geraldine Dawson and Laurie Vismara, this book should be the first book that parents and caregivers read after an Autism diagnosis.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part is Getting started and discusses topics like setting up early intervention program, how early efforts can help your child engage with others and boost your child’s learning along with the essential topic of how important it is to take care of yourself and your family. Often an Autism diagnosis leaves parents overwhelmed but the right start for the journey is for parents to communicate and support each other.

The second part – Everyday strategies to help your child engage, communicate and learn is the heart of the book. The chapter – Step into the spotlight : Capturing your child’s attention is very good for newly diagnosed Autism parents as most kids don’t focus on people and since learning happens when there is attention; teaching your kiddo to pay more attention will lead to overall progress. The authors explain in detail the five steps to achieve this crucial goal :

Step 1 : Identify what is the spotlight of your child’s attention

Step 2 : Step onto the ‘stage’; take your position

Step 3: Eliminate the competition

Step 4 : Identify your child’s social comfort zone and

Step 5: Join in by following your child’s lead.

Every chapter is this section is crucial and very informative as it enables parents to connect and bond with their child and help him/her develop using daily routines.  Some of the my favourite chapters are Having fun with sensory social routines, Building back and forth interactions, The importance of non verbal communication, It’s playtime and The joint attention triangle : sharing interests with others.

The Appendix at the end of the book is good and lists a wealth of information from toys for children to books to associations and organizations to independent websites. A very thorough book that will lay a road map for a new Autism parent to develop into an Empowered Autism parent!
